Boat Trips

Boat trips are a popular excursion from Gairloch harbour, easily reached on foot from The Old Inn.  A range of marine mammals can be seen in Loch Gairloch and the Minch including whales, dolphins and porpoises.  Bird life is extraordinarily rich in and around the loch with White-tailed and Golden Eagles a familiar site as well as numerous species of seabirds, including some of the rarest in the British Isles.  Book your boat trip in advance, especially in July and August – the busiest months.  The following companies operate out of Gairloch Harbour.

The past is all around us in Gairloch and The Old Inn is the perfect place from which to explore historic sites such as An Dùn, the iron age fort on Gairloch beach, and Flowerdale Glen, the seat of Clan Mackenzie.

The award winning Gairloch Museum, tells the stories of the land and its people since prehistoric times.  The museum’s interactive galleries are enjoyable for visitors of all ages. 

The story of one of the most daring Allied operations of World War II is told at the Arctic Convoy Museum on nearby Loch Ewe – the point of departure for convoys taking vital supplied to the Soviet Union.  The route went through perilous Arctic waters, and the ships sailed under the constant threat of air, surface vessel and U-boat attacks. 

You can get hands on with Gairloch’s fishing heritage and learn about sustainable fishing on a Shellfish Safari from Badachro in a traditional, working fishing boat.

At Inverewe Garden you can explore the lochside garden created in a barren wilderness on the Atlantic coast by a Highland laird and his daughter.

Fancy a round of golf?  Gairloch Golf Course has a challenging 9 hole course with a view of the beach and the Torridon mountains.  It might be the most picturesque course you ever play on.

Gairloch Treking Centre offers pony trekking to remember on the beautiful beaches at Redpoint with views over Raasay, Rona and the Applecross peninsula.
