The Species Directory
Minke Whales
The undisputed giants of the Minch. These magnificent baleen whales are a highlight of the summer months, often spotted breaching or feeding in our deep coastal trenches.
Orcas (Killer Whales)
The ultimate apex predators. While sightings are rarer and highly prized, the famous West Coast Community pod and transient pods from Iceland are known to patrol our waters.
Dolphins & Porpoises
Highly intelligent and incredibly playful. From large resident pods of Harbour Porpoises to acrobatic Bottlenose and Common Dolphins, the waves are rarely quiet.
Basking Sharks
Gentle giants of the deep. Arriving with the summer plankton blooms, these colossal fish can often be seen slowly cruising just beneath the surface with their massive fins exposed.
Seals & Otters
Our charming coastal residents. Look closely among the kelp beds and rocky shorelines for playful European Otters, or watch Common and Grey Seals resting on the skerries.
